New officers for 2020

After an energizing election season in 2019 resulting in a new Democratic majority in the Virginia General Assembly, the members of the LOW Democratic Club will now turn our attention to preparing for the 2020 election season.
Members and interested LOW residents are encouraged to join us at our first meeting of the new year on Wednesday, January 8 at 1:30 p.m. at the LOW Community Center.
We’ll start with a presidential “straw poll” to gauge support for the Democratic candidates in advance of our Virginia “Super Tuesday” primary on March 3rd. Come prepared to vote for your preferred candidate! We’ll then welcome our guest speaker Bettina Weiss, campaign manager for the re-election of Rep. Abigail Spanberger.
Ms. Weiss will provide us with an update on Rep. Spanberger’s accomplishments during her first year in the House of Representatives. A member of the Foreign Relations and the Agriculture Committees, Rep. Spanberger has already distinguished herself as a pragmatic problem-solver who is working across party lines to propose and pass legislation that will benefit her constituents and enhance national security. As important has been her constituent services work which has returned more than $570,000 to constituents and solved more than 600 cases in 2019. If you need help dealing with a government agency, contact Rep. Spanberger’s Spotsylvania office for assistance at 540-321-6130. We look forward to seeing Rep. Spanberger here at the Lake a little later this year.
Please join us – visitors and new members are very welcome at all our meetings.
The Lake of the Woods Democratic Club will celebrate the conclusion of a successful year with its annual Christmas luncheon at noon on Wednesday, Dec. 4, at the Generals’ Quarters Restaurant at Locust Grove Town Center.

New officers for 2020 will be introduced at the luncheon and members who contributed to the club’s success during 2019 will be recognized.

IMPORTANT CHANGE: Because our original venue is unable to accommodate us due to a medical emergency, the Christmas Luncheon will be in the Club Room of the LOW Clubhouse at the same time and date. The menu choices have been changed to a buffet of fried chicken, garden salad with choice of two dressings, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, macaroni salad, cornbread, carrot cake, and coffee or tea. The total cost per person including taxes and gratuity is $20. Since the 19 people who have signed up paid $25. The extra $5 can be put towards your 2020 club dues.

Reservations must be made no later than Nov. 25. Reserve a place by sending a check made out to “The LOW Democratic Club” to P.O. Box 1351, Locust Grove, VA 22508. Menu choices should be noted with reservations.
Retired Fredericksburg physician Jay Brock will speak to the Lake of the Woods Democratic Club Sept. 11 on the topic “Single-Payer Medicare for All? Liberal? Conservative? Actually It’s Both.”

“Our current multiple payer system of health insurance has failed to solve the twin problems of lowering costs and covering everyone,” Brock said. “We need to change how we fund and pay for our care — without changing our medical delivery system.”
He said he will explain how a single-payer insurance system will cover everyone as it controls medical costs with principles that will appeal to both liberals and conservatives.
The program will take place at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 11 in Classroom 2 of the LOW Community Center. Everyone is welcome without regard to political affiliation.
Brock, a native New Yorker, is past president of the Fredericksburg Area Medical Society and former chairman of the Department of Family Practice at Mary Washington Hospital.
He attended medical school at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, where he also completed a residency in family practice. He joined the medical faculty at McGill, first as an instructor, and then as a full-time assistant professor of family practice.
He retired from active medical practice in 2014.
