Rally for Tim Kaine!

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18 – NOON

University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg – Lee Hall

Directions from Parking Deck to Lee Hall: Follow sidewalk to the main Campus Walk and then follow main Campus Walk to Lee Hall.

Governor Kaine will give a presentation followed by a question-and-answer period from attendees. He will greet each attendee. Our goal is to get 30 people each from Spotsylvania, Orange, King George, Fredericksburg, and Stafford and the UMW Young Dems. The room holds about 200.

Sen. Houck thanks friends at LOW

Sen. Houck speaks to LOW friends

Sen. Edd Houck, who is facing his eighth contested bid for re-election to the state Senate, told supporters at the Lake of the Woods Clubhouse Sept. 21 that the stakes are higher than ever this time around.

The reasons? First the Democratic majority in the Senate is at stake. Second, Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell would like to see a GOP sweep to bolster his ambitions for higher office.

“We’ve got a fight on our hands,” Sen. Houck, told friends and supporters at a reception organized by Friends of Sen. Houck and attended by many members of the Lake of the Woods Democratic Club.

Sen. Houck described himself as “the kind of guy who sees this thing as a job,” citing his willingness to support any initiative that is in the interest of Virginia’s citizens, without regard to party. In fact, it is his long record of non-partisanship that makes the negative campaign mounted by his Tea Party opponent so misguided, he said.

Orange County slate is complete

Nearly half of the 11 seats for Orange County positions in the Nov. 8 elections will be contested. At the filing deadline on Aug. 23, 19 candidates had been certified by Orange County Registrar Donna Jenni.

Here is a brief rundown of the candidates Orange County voters must choose from:

Sheriff: Incumbent Mark Amos vs. Donald Brooks, Culpeper County Jail administrator

Commonwealth’s attorney: Incumbent Diana Wheeler vs. Gilbert Berger, attorney

Treasurer: Incumbent Phyllis Yancey is unopposed

Commissioner of the Revenue: Incumbent Donna Chewning is unopposed.

Soil and Water Conservation District Commissioners: Incumbents Robert Bradford and Alyson Sappington are unopposed.

Orange County Board of Supervisors

District 2: Incumbent Zack Burkett vs. Jim White, chairman of the Economic Development Authority, and Art Magner, businessman

District 3: Incumbent Teel Goodwin vs. Billy Curry, pastor, and Will Likins, teacher

District 5: Incumbent Board Chairman Lee Frame vs. Suzanne Brady, real estate broker

School Board: Incuments Sherrie Page of District 2, Judy Carter of District 3 and Jim Hopkins of District 5 are unopposed.

The last day to register to vote in the Nov. 8 election is Oct. 17. For more information about the registering to vote or absentee ballots, contact Jenni at the registrar’s office at 672-5262. Information on how to register, including a voter registration form, is on this Web site.

UPDATE: In late September, Bill Curry, a candidate for District 3 supervisor, announced he was dropping out of the race. In addition, Alexis Gray, a substitute teacher in Orange County Schools, announced her write-in candidacy for the District 5 seat on the School Board.

Sen. Houck asks for help

Heyward Whetsell, field director of Sen. Edd Houck’s campaign for re-election to the state Senate, visited the club’s meeting July 21  to recruit volunteers for a phone bank at the senator’s district office at 10813 Courthouse Road, Suite 104, in Fredericksburg. Volunteers are needed from 4 p.m. to 8 or 8:30 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, he said

Heyward also said the campaign is organizing a bi-partisan group called “Friends of Sen. Edd Houck” and is recruiting Democrats, Republicans and independents to get behind the growing enthusiasm to keep Sen. Houck on the job.
