Summer picnic puts Ukraine in spotlight

William B. Taykor, former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine brought a message of hope and optimism to the LOW Democratic Club’s annual Flag Day Picnic on June 21.

The senior fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center, who had recently returned from Ukraine, reported that Russian invaders had made very little progress in their unlawful war. He credited support from the United States and Europe for helping the Ukrainians protect their sovereign territory.

The picnic inside the LOW Community Center was well attended by a convivial crowd who enjoyed a delicious fried chicken dinner and conversation.

Also on hand was Forrest Miller, our Democratic candidate for the Virginia House of Delegates, who asked for the club’s help in turning the 63rd House District blue again.

Reaching out to voters

Lots of voters will turn up at General Elections to vote Democratic, but when it comes to Primary Elections sometimes they don’t make the effort. That’s a real shame because it’s important for Democrats to be involved in the process at every level.

To encourage participation in the June 17 Democratic Primary, LOW Dems and the Orange County Democratic Committee plan to send out hundreds of personal postcard messages urging Democratic voters to “Defy Expectations” and vote in large numbers.

There will be a Postcard Party from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, May 22 at Fareways Cafe in Lake of the Woods. Postcards and address stickers will be provided. The LOW Dems will provide some postage, but volunteers may want to buy stamps on their own as a contribution to the health of our Democracy.

The pre-printed postcards also contain key dates leading up to the June 17 Primary and links to information about our candidates for statewide office, voting registration, polling places and applications to vote by mail.

If you can’t attend the May 22 session, but you’d like to do your part, contact Jeanne Allen at jeanneallen123@gmail.com and ask for a stack of postcards to write at home.

It’s so important that Abigail Spanberger be Virginia’s next governor and that she has a strong team to help her resist the misguided Republican assault on our rights in the Old Dominion.

Candidate forum advances campaigns

Many thanks to the Democratic candidates for statewide offices who attended our forum on May 8. They were (left to right) Shannon Taylor (online), Alex Bastani. Ghazala Hashmi, Babur Lateef, Victor Salgado, and Jay Jones. Taylor and Jones are candidates for attorney general. Bastani, Hashmi, Lateef and Salgado are running for lieutenant governor. Aaron Rouse and Lavar Stoney, who could not attend the forum, are also running for lieutenant governor. Abigail Spanberger is unopposed in the primary in her campaign for governor. Virginia’s Democratic Primary Election will be held on June 17, and successful candidates will face statewide voters in the General Election on November 4. Early voting at the Orange County Registrar’s Office began on May 2 and will continue until June 14.
