LOW Director explains budget to club members

Pete Brown, a member of the Lake of the Woods Association’s Board of Directors, visited the club at its March 13 meeting to talk about the association’s $10 million budget.

Brown said that a priority of board members is to keep the annual assessment as low as possible. Toward that end, he said, the board managed to pare next year’s assessment increase down to $52, down from an initial estimate of about $130.

Brown said the board’s priority for the coming year is successful completion of the Clubhouse Area Recreation Project, which is expected to open this summer.

Brown is a retired executive of radio and television stations who was elected to the seven-member governing body of the association in 2018.

School superintendent to address club

Dr. Cecil Snead, the new superintendent of Orange County Schools, will speak to the Lake of the Woods Democratic Club Feb. 13 on his expectations for the public school division.

The meeting will take place at 1:30 p.m. in Classroom A of the LOW Community Center. The meeting is open to the public without regard to political affiliation.

Snead, 51, became superintendent of the 5,000-student division in July 2018, succeeding Dr. Brenda Tanner, who retired. He had been superintendent of Buckingham County Public Schools for six years.

He holds an undergraduate degree in mathematics education from Virginia Tech, a master’s degree from Radford University and a doctorate in education from Virginia Tech. He taught math and computer science in Floyd and Montgomery counties before taking on administration positions in Montgomery County and later in Roanoke County.

Snead’s wife, Sherrie, is a retired English teacher. The couple has three daughters, the youngest of whom is a third-year student at the University of Virginia.

Christmas luncheon will be Dec. 5

The annual Christmas luncheon of The Lake of the Woods Democratic Club will be at noon, Wednesday, Dec. 5 at the Generals’ Quarters Restaurant.

This event will end a year of great work supporting Democratic candidates in our region, state and nation. Officers for 2019 will be introduced at the luncheon.

The cost of the meal, including tax and tip, is $25 per person. R.S.V.P. and payment should be sent to Ellen Wilson, the club’s treasurer, no later than Nov. 27. Ellen’s address is 204 Seven Pines Drive, Locust Grove, VA 22508.

The menu will include a side salad, a choice of three entrees (roast beef with mashed potatoes, crab cake with mashed potatoes or pasta alfredo with vegetables) and a choice of dessert (flourless chocolate cake or bread pudding.)

A student journalist interviews candidate

Suzanna Stohr, grand-daughter of Shirley Pfile, president of the LOW Democratic Club, interviewed Abigail Spanberger, our candidate for Congress from the 7th District at our recent Tri-County rally.

Her account of the interview appeared in the Oct. 12 issue of The Growl, student newspaper for Massaponax High School.

Suzanna’s story is an example of the gathering interest that young people have in our democratic institutions — an interest that we are only too glad to cultivate.
