Candidate for lieutenant governor to visit club

Del. Sam Rasoul of Roanoke, a candidate for lieutenant governor of Virginia, will address members of the LOW Democratic Club at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 10 via the online meeting app Zoom.

Del. Sam Rasoul

Rasoul has represented Virginia’s 11th House of Delegates District in the General Assembly since 2014. He has emerged as a leader in our party’s crowded field for lieutenant governor after raising more double what some of the other candidates raised.

Rasoul, the first Muslim member of Virginia’s legislature, is one of the more progressive members of the House. He grew up in Roanoke, received his bachelor’s degree from Roanoke College in Salem, and then earned a master’s degree in business administration from Hawaii Pacific University in Honolulu.

He is a member of the Legislative Black Caucus and the Rural Caucus in the House of Delegates.

Rasoul was born in Warren, Ohio, in 1981, the son of Palestinian immigrants. He and his wife Layaly have three children.

Democrats will choose their nominees in a June 8 state-run primary. At least eight candidates are seeking the nomination for lieutenant governor.

Club will host candidate for governor

Jennifer Carroll Foy, candidate for governor of Virginia, will speak to the Lake of the Woods Democratic Club on February 10.

Jennifer Carroll Foy

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. via the Zoom online meeting app.

Carroll Foy was born and raised in Petersburg, Va. After participating in Junior ROTC in high school she attended Virginia Military Institute (VMI) and was one of the first African-American women to graduate from the institution. She went on to earn her master’s and law degrees.

Her work as an attorney has focused on giving a voice to the often voiceless – children, individuals experiencing homelessness, those with mental illness and others. She was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 2017 from the 2nd District representing parts of Prince William and Stafford counties.  She recently resigned from the House to focus on her gubernatorial run.

The LOW Democrats sponsored a food drive to benefit the Lions Wilderness Food Pantry on January 18as part of the Martin Luther King Day National Day of Service. The Club would like to express appreciation to Pat Unkle and her Lion colleagues who were so quick to facilitate this event, to LOWA Communications for helping spread the word, and the LOW Fire and Rescue for publicizing the event on its message board.

Lieutenant governor candidate to visit

The next meeting of the LOW Democratic Club will feature a conversation with Delegate Elizabeth Guzman, candidate for Virginia’s lieutenant governor.

The meeting, via the online meeting app Zoom, will begin at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 9.

Del. Elizabeth Guzman

Del. Guzman currently represents the 31st District, covering parts of Fauquier and Prince William counties. She was elected in 2017 and has been a champion of progressive legislation including holding corporate polluters accountable, providing raises for teachers, and the expansion of Medicaid to more than 400,000 Virginians. She serves as vice-chair of the House Education Committee and chair of the Sub-Committee on Social Services.

Del. Guzman holds master’s degrees in both public administration and in social work and is raising four children with her husband Carlos.

We look forward to hearing about the upcoming legislative session and the platform for her candidacy.

The meeting will also include volunteer appreciation as we recognize the many volunteers who helped during the fall campaigns that re-elected Rep. Abigail Spanberger and Sen. Mark Warner, and elected Joe Biden President and Kamala Harris Vice President.

We’ll also thank outgoing chair Shirley Pfile for her eight years of leadership of the club, and Chris Carr for serving for 13 years as historian and chair of the Special Events Committee. Their contributions to the success of the club over the years cannot be overstated, and we hope their many friends and fans will join us on Zoom to express their appreciation.

As we look ahead to 2021, we’ll also elect officers for the upcoming calendar year at this meeting. The slate of officers proposed by the Nominating Committee is:
— Chair – Valerie Smallwood
— Vice-Chair – Paul Conrad
— Treasurer – Howard Newman
— Secretary – William Wemmerus

Please join us for an informative and celebratory meeting!

Poll workers needed on Election Day

Having poll workers at all the polling places where Lake of the Woods voters cast their ballots will help insure a smooth and reliable election process. Volunteers are needed to represent the club at four precincts. We want to be covered from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Nov. 3.

All precautions will be taken to insure that workers are protected from exposure to COVID-19, but because of the increased risk for elderly and compromised people, young, healthy volunteers are especially needed.

This is your opportunity to contribute in a meaningful way to the democratic process.

If interested, please email the LOW Democrats at webmaster@lowdemocrats.org.
