July 7 activities cancelled due to 104-degree heat

The July 7th activities at Clubhouse Point have been canceled due to the forecasted 104-degree heat.

Parade chair Betty Beck reported late Friday that the club’s participation in the LOW Independence Day Parade has also been cancelled. Congressional Candidate Wayne Powell, who had planned to march with the club in the parade, will visit Lake of the Woods at another event at a later time.

The cancellation of events at Clubhouse Point is disappointing, but better not to risk the well-being of our members and the public.

Flag Day Picnic a great success!

Wayne Powell explained how he intends to “fire Cantor!”

Nearly 100 guests of all ages enjoyed good food and good fellowship at the club’s annual Flag Day Picnic at Sweetbriar Park on June 13.

Wayne Powell, candidate for Congress from Virginia’s 7th District, told the supportive crowd how he intends to restore our dysfunctional Congress by removing Eric Cantor, its most obstructive member.

Mr. Powell announced that Dave “Mudcat” Saunders, a renowned Democratic political activist, had joined his campaign and had already arranged for several national venues to tap into the large and growing disgust with Rep. Cantor’s destructive and divisive record.

As has become traditional, The Demettes, songstresses and political satirists, entertained picnic goers. This year’s offering was a cheery nod to President Obama, sung to the tune of “My Guy.”

It was a beautiful day at the Lake, as the club served up burgers and hot dogs and club members provided a table full of other picnic favorites. There were red, white and blue cupcakes for dessert, each with a tiny paper U.S. flag on top.

A lovely wine basket was the prize in this year’s raffle, and participants snatched up tickets. Democratic pins, cups and other memorabilia were on sale. All available Obama-Biden yard signs were sold and orders for many more were taken. Lake of the Woods will be festooned with Democratic yard signs this political season.

Chris Carr and Lois Powell, special events chairs, and their committee are to be congratulated for their work in organizing another successful picnic.

Wayne Powell will be guest at annual Flag Day picnic

Good food, good company and good times will be the order of the day when The Lake of the Woods Democratic Club hosts its annual Flag Day Membership Picnic June 13 at Sweetbriar Park.

Wayne Powell, candidate for the Congress from Virginia’s 7th District, will be a special guest at the event. He’ll speak briefly about his determination to help restore a dysfunctional U.S. Congress.

The picnic will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the covered Lion George Lewis Pavilion in Sweetbriar Park.

Everyone’s invited to the picnic, which has become a much-anticipated early summer tradition at the Lake. There will be hamburgers and hot dogs and a groaning board of other all-America fare, such as potato salad, baked beans, casseroles, side-dishes, watermelon and red-white-and-blue cupcak es.

There’s no charge for admission, but donations to defer expenses are encouraged and appreciated.

After everyone has had plenty to eat, there will be patriotic program, beginning with a flag ceremony and featuring the club’s own “Demettes,” a crowd-pleasing bevy of divas belting out a repertoire of lively and hilarious songs, usually with political overtones.

Raffle tickets will be sold on a lovely wine basket, including two bottles of good wine, wine glasses, candle, two Democratic donkey pins, wine glass tags, gourmet crackers and other surprises.

Speaker explains how health law benefits Americans

Dr. Lillis’ presentation was well attended

Dr. Christopher Lillis, a Fredericksburg physician representing Doctors for America, cut through the political hysteria and revealed the compelling arguments in favor of the Affordable Care Act at a special Sunday afternoon program March 25 at the LOW Clubhouse.

Dr. Lillis’ presentation included authoritative answers to a variety of thoughtful questions from an audience of about 80 members and guests.

The Affordable Care Act, labeled by detractors as “Obamacare,” is already saving American lives, Dr. Lillis said, even though many of its more important provisions do not go into effect until 2014. He said as many as two million Americans who would otherwise be without health insurance are already protected by the law.

The speaker described how skyrocketing costs over the past 30 years have made it impossible for many middle-class Americans to afford even basic health care. If the trend had been allowed to continue, the physical health and economic health of most Americans would be at stake.

Dr. Lillis said the individual mandate in the Affordable Care Act is vital to the success of the legislation. Of eight states who have tried to reform health care insurance, the only one to succeed has been Massachusetts because that state was the only one to include a mandate that citizens buy insurance.

Without the individual mandate, the insured pool becomes sicker and insurance companies, in order to insure their economic success, will withdraw their support of the legislation and begin to lobby against even its most successful provisions.
Dr. Lillis

The efforts of misguided politicians and self-serving businesses to undermine the law are not in the best interest of American families, Dr. Lillis said. The result of those efforts, he said, will be the suffering and death of loved ones, friends and neighbors.

Dr. Lillis left immediately after his presentation to go to Washington, D.C., where he planned to be on the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court, which began hearing arguments in a court case brought by attorneys general in 26 states, including Virginia. He will be a part of a group from Doctors of America speaking to the media in defense of the health care law.
